About PMA

Portland Metro Arts is registered as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization within the State of Oregon. PMA sponsors a variety of arts education, performance and outreach programs and projects throughout the Portland Metropolitan area, year-round. The organization has gone through a great deal of change since its beginnings in 1978.

Originally formed as Ballet Workshop Advocates in 1978, it changed names to Metro Dance Advocates in 1983 and has recently emerged as Portland Metro Performing Arts in 2000. We changed our name to Portland Metro Arts in 2009. Each change reflected the broadening of interests and scope of the organization, to encompass a wider range of arts disciplines. The activities of the organization are governed by a volunteer Board. As a non-profit organization we rely on the generosity and support of our community partners to continue to provide quality arts education and performance experiences. Here's how you can help.

Our Mission

To insure that everyone, particularly youth, have an opportunity to learn, perform and experience the arts; by providing meaningful access to quality arts education and performance programs for the community.

Guiding Principles

Bullet Insure quality dance, theatre, music and visual arts education and performance opportunities remain accessible to everyone, regardless of income level, race, religion, gender or national origin.
Bullet Maintain PMA Center & School as direct arts service providers and resources to the arts community, nonprofits, schools, and general public.
Bullet Provide support and direction for arts education and performance projects not otherwise available through the public or private sector. Work in concert with artists, other organizations, agencies and programs to provide, support, and encourage arts programs.
Bullet Foster appreciation and awareness of the benefits that arts bring to our community; arts enrich our lives, encourage creativity and open new perspectives in all aspects of life.
Bullet Actively pursue a philosophy of non-discrimination and honor the diversity of this community and the richness it brings.

“If you removed all the arts in the lives of our children…there is no way that adding more mathematics, increasing more reading programs, requiring more science, mandating more tests, or scheduling more computer courses could replace what they would have lost.”
- National Arts Education Association

"“The 'back-to-basics' curriculum, while it has merit, ignores the most urgent void in our present system - absence of self-discipline. The arts, inspiring - indeed requiring - self-discipline, may be more basic to our national survival than the traditional credit courses.”
- Paul Harvey

"“The arts must be at the heart of every child's learning experience if…
they are to have a chance to dream and to create, to have beliefs, to carry a sense of cultural identity.”
- James D Wolfensohn, former chairman of The Kennedy Center

"I am still learning.”
- Michelangelo

"What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the soul."
- Joseph Addison

"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.”

"Good schools, like good societies and good families, celebrate and cherish diversity."
- Deborah Meier

"Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or the same way."
- George Evans

"What is important is to keep learning, to enjoy challenge, and to tolerate ambiguity. In the end there are no certain answers."
- Martina Horner

"Do not train children to learning by force and harshness, but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each."
- Plato
