Starting at the Right Age Enrolling in an age appropriate class is the key element. If a child is put into classes or performance experiences that are not age appropriate, they may feel overwhelmed, frustrated and want to stop. The last thing anyone wants is to turn a child off to the arts just because they had an unpleasant experience. Waiting until the right age will allow them to progress much faster. Age 2½-4: Parent-Child Dance class like Tiny Boppers will help ease the transition and make dance class a positive experience. Age 3 ½-Kindergarten: Pre-Dance gives children an opportunity for learning in a setting, independent from their parents. School Grades 1 & up: By first grade a child is physically, conceptually and socially ready for a class that teaches more standard dance forms like Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and Hip Hop. Age 6 and under: A group introductory class will give them a good foundation in music basics which will be helpful in later private lessons and ensemble work. have the necessary physical development. Guitar: For a standard sized guitar, 9 years old is the earliest we recommend. Younger students generally have smaller hands and inadequate strength to play comfortably. Voice: Due to the physical nature of voice lessons; proper breathing techniques, development of the vocal chords and breath control; younger bodies are not yet developed enough for the rigors of vocal technique. We recommend group singing before the age of 12. Age 4-Kindergarten: Young children use make-believe, fantasy and storytelling to interpret the world around them. They should experience theatre in a setting that will build confidence. School Grades 1-3: By first grade a child has developed better reading and oral skills, and is socially ready for a focused class with more technical demands. School Grades 4-6: By fourth grade a child has developed skills as a reader and is ready to move on to scripted theatre experiences. School Grades 6-8: Students are ready for an exploration of all aspects of the theatre experience through improvisation, playwriting, character development and movement that culminates in creation of performance pieces. |

MEET OUR NEW OUTREACH COORDINATOR
Thanks to a generous grant from Meyer Memorial Trust, we created and filled the new position of Outreach Coordinator naming Elizabeth Allen to it. Miss Elizabeth has taught music at PMA for over five years while also working as a Public Affairs Specialist for the U.S. Navy. She will be working with local schools to provide students with arts enrichment that continues beyond the school day in both our in-school and after-school arts programs. Miss Elizabeth will also continue to coordinate our Music Programs, scheduling students and classes and helping the school to grow. The value of arts education is well documented. Understanding concepts in math, reading, reasoning and problem solving are accelerated by consistent arts experiences. Students are also better able to focus on other activities after participating in arts programming. Additionally, it is an excellent means of improving the group dynamic, through co-operative effort. We are excited about the impetus this new position will bring to our outreach efforts. |
